http://omega-constellation-collectors.blogspot.com/2009/11/omega-chronostop-stopwatch-for-wrist.html Omega Chronostop - Stopwatch for the Wrist http://omega-constellation-collectors.blogspot.com/2009/11/omega-chronostop-stopwatch-for-wrist.html
While the reason for this site is to pay homage to Omega Constellations of the 1950s and 60s, which I believe to be some of the best production watches ever made, I receive a constant stream of correspondence from visitors asking questions about other iconic Omega models of the time.

If questions go beyond that of a trickle and there are no other sites dedicated to a particular collection, I customarily knock up an essay to fill the void. Such was the case with the Omega Chronostop, a particularly charming fusion of design and function from the 1960s.

As I was gathering pictures of different examples of this model, I happened upon Steve Waddington’s excellent Omega vintage resource and discovered that he had already done the job!

Under the title, ‘Omega Chronstop Wrist Watches’, Steve’s essay reviews comprehensively, in both words and pictures, the breadth of this elegantly designed stopwatch for the wrist. Click here to view it.

The value of Omega Chronostops has risen quite markedly over the past two to three years, particularly for examples that feature the ‘Drivers Dial’ and retain their original finish. The 'drivers' models were designed to be worn on the underside of the wrist, and they most certainly deserve a place in any collection of 1960s Omega tool watches.

http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/2009/11/21/we-find-explain-a-double-swiss-underlined-tropical-dial-role.html We Find & Explain a Double Swiss, Underlined, Tropical Dial Rolex Cosmograph http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/2009/11/21/we-find-explain-a-double-swiss-underlined-tropical-dial-role.html Often times watch guys go a little crazy when it comes to describing their unique pieces. We use terms like Red, Double Red, Blackout, Floating, Underlined, Explorer Dial, Tropical, Spider, Four-Line, and a many more seemingly nonsensical terms. Some make a lot of sense, for example a Red Submariner has the word "Submariner" written in red. Others aren't quite as obvious.

Today we have come across a very early and very rare version of the Rolex Cosmograph, later named the Daytona. In fact, this reference (6239) was the very first Cosmograph made, and because it doesn't feature the word "Daytona" on the dial, we can place it around 1963-1965 or so. You can also tell this is a very early Cosmograph because it has a serial number of under 1,000,000, and a case back from the previous reference, the 6238 which is a Pre-Daytona chronograph.

However, being an early Daytona isn't enough for this watch. It also features a "Double Swiss, Underlined, Tropical" dial. So what exactly does this mean? It sounds complicated doesn't it? We put together a 30 second video to add some clarity to the situation. See below:

To add a little further context, it is called a Double Swiss dial because "Swiss" is written in two places, it is called "underlined" because there is a small horizontal line under the word "Cosmograph" and it is called tropical because the back subdials have faded a to nice "tropical" dark brown. It is these little minute differences that make a good watch great, and a great watch epic, but you need to pay close attention, otherwise you might miss something amazing.

We hope this clears things up for some folks, and this watch is available for sale from a great vintage dealer in San Francisco, who happens to have just re-launched his website so take a look around and see what he's got (we've got our eyes on more than a few pieces). Click here for the details of the Double Swiss Underlined Tropical Dial Rolex Cosmograph reference 6239.

http://thewatchery.blogspot.com/2009/11/jewelery-watch-of-this-year-hublot.html Jewelery Watch of the Year Hublot Black Cavier Bang Out of This World. http://thewatchery.blogspot.com/2009/11/jewelery-watch-of-this-year-hublot.html Hublot won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve prize for jewelery watch of the year 2009, and I am not surprised. Limited to but one piece, the Black Cavier Bang is strictly black tie with a Solo T Tourbillon and Power reserve of 120 hours making this watch a power house. Hublot ,however, thinks it rather resembles caviar and has provided the watch with the title,"Black Cavier Bang."
At One million Dollars it does not matter what it is called, it matters what it costs.

The cost may have to do with shipping of the raw materials; specifically the Black Diamond. Hundreds of precision cut black diamonds totaling 34.5 total carats (322 on the case, 179 on the bezel, and 30 on the clasp), pave this watch and thus the surprising origins of the black diamond is quite pertinent.
What if I say, black diamonds have journeyed from outer space? No, this is not some cheap sci fi fictional notion that I have concocted. This is real.
According to geologists, black diamonds came to our earth from outer space. (Source: Astrophysical Journal Letters December 20, 2006) Otherwise known as carbonado diamonds, these diamonds contain trace elements of hydrogen which indicates an origin in a hydrogen-rich interstellar space. Infrared synchrotron radiation at Brookhaven National Laboratory was used to discover the diamonds' source.
In addition, black diamonds are found only in Brazil and the Central African Republic. In all the worlds mining fields whether it be South Africa, China, India; where 600 tons have been mined, not a single black diamond has been found. Another clue to the extraterrestrial nature of the black diamond is in its make up. The black diamonds Carbonado diamonds are typically pea sized or larger porous aggregates of many tiny black crystals.
Early data from scientists Jozsef Garai and Stephen Haggerty of Florida International University, as well as new research support the theory that showing that carbonado diamonds formed in stellar supernovae explosions.
Black diamonds were once the size of asteroids, a kilometer or more in diameter when they first landed on Earth.

No wonder the Hublot Black Caviar Bang is a world "first". Hublot says it is both a technological and artistic achievement. The setting is completely invisible and only the black and deep tones of rare black diamonds are visible.

Creating this exceptional watch demanded over 2,000 hours of meticulous work, from design to final adjustment. 544 VVS TW-IF quality baguette diamonds adorn the watch’s case, dial, crown and deployment clasp.

Now putting the black diamond in perspective, the One Million Dollar Price Tag doesn't seem that cosmic.

Omega Constellation Black Dial
Calibre 504 Omega 18k gold Constellations aren't all that common, only 25000 pieces having been produced across a range of metals and dials. Black dialled calibre 504 models are in a different league altogether, with less than a thousand believed to have been manufactured.

Generally in the 1950s, black dialled models were a ‘special order’ watch and so, today, with the resurgence of interest in, and popularity of, black dialled Constellations from the nineteen-fifties and sixties, serious collectors hanker to have an example in their collections.

I received an email from John Hardy who appears to have won the trifecta!!! John reports:

"Although I was very inexperienced with buying watches, I had always wanted a gold “Constellation” and having had since I was 17 a Speedmaster Professional (1970), when I saw this watch with its “black face” I had to try for it and I was lucky enough to succeed.!"

John continues, "" I spent some time on your excellent web site and became satisfied it was real. Sometime after receiving it, the seller sent me the watch’s original watch box, Certificate of Chronometre and original purchase documents, being receipt and guarantee showing a purchase date of 2/9/1959. It still has the original sheets of carbon paper showing the type writer imprints between the pages! The seller says the old gentleman who was the previous and original owner brought them in after the sale and “thought I might like them” and they then sent them on to me as a gift!""

What a superb eBay story. I hope you have a bottle of quality whiskey on the way to the original owner, John, because his generosity has probably added between 700 to 1000 dollars to the value of your purchase. Original box and papers provide watches with provenance and provenance is very important, particularly with very uncommon watches. You now have a magnificent piece, together with original box and papers. It would be charming if you could communicate with the owner and obtain some background to his purchase. It would add a wonderful touch to a piece that I hope will become an heirloom in your family.

Above are some pictures of John’s find. Click on the pictures for an enlarged view.

Armand Nicolet is a company deeply embedded in the Swiss tradition of luxury watch craftsmanship. Situated in Tramelan in the Burmese Jura, Armand Nicolet captivates the precision, craftsmanship and perfection of watchmaking that has occupied this region for centuries. Armand Nicolet's Women's Watches evoke a sense of whimsical fantasy. The dials shimmer with hundreds of gentle shades provided by the composition of the mother-of-pearl.
Queen Elizabeth gave mother-of-pearl its name in the 15th century. The use of mother-of-pearl has a long history. In the 1920's tombs of Sumerian Royalty from ancient Mesopotamia yielded a grand treasure of gold, silver, gemstones and wooden ornaments and musical instruments inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Mother-of-Pearl was used in many cultures for various reasons, but one cannot help but notice the iridescent beauty of this material. It is created by the bivalves (two-part) mollusk who secrete in in the event of injury or the invasion of foreign particles. The secretion is comprised of calcium carbonate (derivative mineral of Aragonite) and conchiolin (a binding protein). Mollusks cannot regulate their own temperature and are extremely vulnerable to changing environmental conditions.
Armand Nicolet's use of mother-of-pearl stems from a tradition spanning thousands of years, and the result is as intriguing and mesmerizing as the artifacts found from past civilizations. Each watch is crafted with care and precision thereby providing an end product of extreme quality. Powered by the motion of ones hand, these watches require no batteries. The skeletonized hand add a delicate touch to the dial.

To Purchase the timeless beauty of an Armand Nicolet Luxury Watch, look no further than THE WATCHERY. For a limited time only, THE WATCHERY has reduced the prices by 60% on its collection of Armand Nicolet Watches.

It's amazing how different a timepiece can be perceived just by changing something ever so slightly. The Rolex Datejust, AKA the most versatile watch on the planet, can be made clean and simple, interesting and exotic, or even notorious by adding a simple logo or a rock or two.

Today we've found a piece of pure Americana that happens to be in the form of a Rolex wristwatch. This classic Datejust was made in 1969 for the two participants in that year's Cotton Bowl. For those who don't remember, it was this game that Texas beat Tennessee by a score of 36 to 13. These watches were given to only the teams themselves and we can't imagine that every player and coach got one, so this is probably a pretty rare Rolex.

What make this watch so interesting is just how the signature is placed onto the face. It's done in such a weird, almost careless way that it makes this high-grade Swiss watch into something that can only be an American heirloom. It's almost campy.

Texas, Tennessee, and college football...just what comes to mind when you think of Rolex. This very cool piece of American sports history is for sale here courtesy of our friends at Fourtané, the same guys who lent us that amazing Daytona for the SLS Video

This time the challenging task was accomplished by three courageous climbers, sponsored by the renowned Swiss watchmaking house Jaeger-LeCoultre.

The team was formed of the Swiss mountaineer Stephane Schaffter, 19-time Everest veteran Apa Sherpa and Little Karim, who happens to be an acclaimed expert in this domain. The members of the party succeeded in ascending a 6,589-meter peak, in spite of constant avalanche threats and the base camp, being heavily snowed. The mountain has been officially entitled "Antoine LeCoultre's Peak" in order to pay homage to the brand’s participation in the event.

Jaeger-LeCoultre watches, distinguished by impeccable functionality, were exposed on the wrists of all three mountaineers. It is worth mentioning that the watches chosen to represent the brand, were issued in different periods of time.]]>

This prestigious honor was achieved by the brand shortly after its Quadruple Tourbillon watch had won a title of the Best Complicated watch at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie Asia 2009, which was held in Singapore last September.

The Technique is the model, developed, executed and assembled in the brand’s ateliers, located in La Chaux-de-Fonds. A true embodiment of the mystery and sophistication, it employs the Double Tourbillon 30 degrees, which happens to be the first invention of Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey.

Yes, They Do Exist and They Are Damn Cool http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/2009/11/17/a-white-rolex-explorer-yes-they-do-exist-and-they-are-damn-c.html

We've said it before and we'll say it again, the Rolex Explorer is probably one of our favorite watches, period, end of sentence. It is the smallest, simplest, and most understated Rolex sport watch and its purity has been left unchanged for the better part of a century. We have written about some pretty interesting ones in our day (for a full list, see here) but if there is one uniting quality, it is that each Explorer had a black face. Or did they??

Today's watch is most certainly a Rolex Explorer, but a rare white-dialled version from the early 1960s or 1950s. It is reference 6610, which pre-dates the more common 1016, which ran all the way up until 1990. It is being sold on The Vintage Rolex Forum and the seller is asking $11,250. He seems like a knowledgeable seller and the watch comes with a one year warranty as it was recently serviced by a Rolex technician.

This vintage El Primero chronograph is really unlike any Zenith we've come across, and it's rather cool. They usually look a lot like this. The 18 karat yellow gold case is nice against the white face, but it is really the pattern work around the registers that set this watch apart from more traditional El Primeros.

As the seller mentions, it features "a magnificent 3 color silver, champagne, and black dial in elaborate and decorative pattern reminiscent of a Monte Carlo or Las Vegas gambling chip!" While we're not so sure about that, this is definitely a great and interesting looking vintage automatic chronograph.

Price is $8750, which seems rather high, even for a gold case and historic movement, but still a cool watch. Click here for the details

The effect is remarkably appealing with a sense of fluid contours and timeless elegance.

But, what if you really wanted a great Swiss watch from a storied manufacturer that featured the very same movement and was also issued to a South American Military force in the 1960s, AND what if it was about 1/10th the price?

Today is your lucky day folks. A rare Heuer Autavia that was made for the Argentinian Air Force is what we've found for you, and it is a total beauty. It features an engraved case back with the Argentiniam Military sign and issue number. Inside this classic Heuer is the same Valjoux 72 movement that powers the Daytona as well as many other vintage chronos.

This watch has a great provenance, is in great, original condition, and even looks a hell of a lot like a Rolex Daytona. Don't be fooled though, the Autavia is a great watch in its own right and this is a piece we'd scoop up as quickly as possible. It is priced at 2,850 euros which seems fair to us, but we hope our own network of Heuer experts voice their opinion.

Actually, a watch just like this is featured in the great Heuer Book written by our friend Arno Haslinger, on pages 36-37. Our advice? Pick up the watch and the book.

Click here for the details on this 1960s Heuer Autavia issued to the Air Force of Argentina (you have to scroll down past an Indy logo'd Carrera Dato 45).

Fake Omega Constellation vintage
Every year in the lead up to Christmas, an army of bottom feeders, parasites and other opportunistic vermin invades on-line vintage watch markets to feed off the naivete and yuletide sentiment of people wishing to acquire nice vintage watches for those who are significant in their lives.

Judging by the number of fake new watches and bogus or franken vintage pieces appearing in a range of brands, this year is hotting up to be a biggie. Yes, it’s going to be a bumper Christmas for the crims and shonks who parade their fake wares on eBay, other on-line establishments and some bricks and mortar dealerships.

Sadly, January is my biggest month for emails from either purchasers or recipients of these counterfeit monstrosities. The collective disappointment and heartache revealed in such correspondence does much to dampen my experience of this the season to be jolly and to express goodwill to all men.

And so, in self-defence, I post another warning.

The pictures of the two watches above are those of the latest fake Omega Constellations coming on to the market. The first listed on eBay by German yuletide kill-joy watchauktion24 (click here) is from a new batch of fake pink gold Constellation models coming out of Asia. Lesser Omega calibres (usually tired old bangers from Seamasters, Geneve’s and early de Villes) are married with the fake cases and dials and sold as the real thing. No Chrismas pudding for watchauktion24 this year as this seller knows exactly what he is selling – shame on you!

Here’s hoping that Santa’s reindeers collectively crap as they pass over bgm 197's house in Zachodniopomorskie, Poland for listing this fake that pretends to be a yellow gold Omega Constellation. Again, with such a history in selling watches, this merciless Pole almost certainly knows he’s going to break a heart with this piece of junk.

Please, do your research before you buy a vintage Constellation for your someone special! Read this essay I wrote on authenticating solid gold Constellations. Bone up on the movement series that powered specific Constellations and read some of the posts on cases and dials. Buy your special vintage watch with knowledge and aforethought and they’ll love you forever!!

POSTSCRIPT

I'm delighted to say that eBay finally pulled the Polish listing and Watchauktion24 voluntarily stopped his auction, for which we offer thanks.

Vianney Halter Antiqua http://timetapestry.blogspot.com/2009/11/masterpiece-of-horological-art-vianney.html so its been a couple of months of ownership now... [click here see the post when i first got it :)] what has the reaction been?

i do have a lot of people, 'folks on the street' giving it stares. sometimes i watch them watchin it and sometimes you just sense it... recently in a lift heading down, a colleague whom i have not met before steps in and says 'wow! thats a cool watch' and we start talking about this wonderful timepiece and about its maker, a French watch making genius... Vianney Halter, as we head down... other colleagues have commented too of course, the usual 'that looks interesting' 'that looks cool' etc... at a camera shop, the sales lady serving me seemed more interested to talk about it then the camera i was looking at... and the list of chance opportunities for me to share about it grows and grows...

a common 1st response from other watch loving mates who have seen pics of it on the net but not in the metal, as its a relatively rare beauty, is 'it looks much bigger in pictures' or 'i thought it was bigger' and one can't really blame them... check out the pictures below and you may think its the size of your PC monitor ;) but for me personally, its 'not-so-huge' size is wonderful. its further testament to its beauty... it doesn't have to be shouty, like the look-at-me racket of some wrist clocks out there. this is wonderful as it is... this is perfect... (to me at least :) the subtleness extends to the movement as well... simple and pure... and not trying at all and in that way succeeding in being mesmerizing with its mysterious rotor...

Kari Voutilainen noticed it when we met and commented how he really loved this piece, his eyes lighting up when we talked about it. Peter Speake Marin had much praise and echoed my views of Vianney and this watch when we had a chance to chat over a cup of tea. At my recent meetup with Max and Alain, Alain had mentioned to me how much he liked this piece and Max shared his wonderful story of seeking out Vianney after seeing this watch of his... the Opus 3 tale being one that will have a happy ending for a number of lucky owners. it may be realised by others but it was conceived and dreamed up by 2 of horology's greats in our time. an utterly relevant work of horological art.

but this is the center of all of it... this watch... a masterpiece... in case u are still wondering what i think about owning this, let me just say this... it never fails to make me dream...
