When we spent some time with Perrelet's rainmaker, the Turbine, a few months back, we were shocked by just how much attention it got on the streets of NYC. It was like we had a topless Jennifer Love Hewitt on our wrist (in the 90s). As a follow up to the Turbine, Perrelet recently announced three split-second chronographs clearly aimed at the same buyers as the Turbine. The new Perrelets feature an in-house P-241 movement and what we like the best about this watch is that discs have replaced the hands, allowing you to see even more of the skeletonized movement. These things look…

An Original Vintage Vulcain Cricket for $550: Give Em Hell Harry Would Be Proud
4 Nov 2009 | 3:52 pmWe've given you the story of the Vulcain Cricket before, and it's one that reader really seemed to enjoy. If you haven't had the pleasure of reading about the watch worn by every US President since Harry Truman (except GW), click here. We also found a really cool Nautical Cricket that, while considerably more expensive than traditional Crickets, has a hell of a look to it and not bad provenance either. Today however we've tracked town a traditional Vulcain Cricket, just like the type worn by Mr. Truman. It features a perfectly functioning mechanical alarm (oh how we… -
1940s Doxa Chronograph: A Company Known For Divers Makes A Mean Chronograph
2 Nov 2009 | 4:53 pmWe haven't given much attention to Doxa here on Hodinkee. No slight intended, they're just not really our thing. Hard to say why really, especially with such a lengthy list of horological firsts. And by that we mean one definite first (first diving watch with an orange face?) and one debatable first (first production watch with helium escape vale, although most believe Rolex had one built first). So their history isn't exactly the stuff of legends, but it's probably more respectable than we're making it seem (for a serious look at Doxa from our friends at Monochrome,… -
Support The Art of Horology Project & Help Educate Future Watchmakers While Doing Some Good
2 Nov 2009 | 10:00 amHow many watchmakers do you think exist within the United States? Right now, there are less than 5,000. And how many watches do you think there are within the United states? See where we're going with this? There is a serious need for trained watchmakers today and our friends at Nkiru America have nobly volunteered to do something about it. Titled The Art of Horology Project, Nkiru along with Audi USA, have created a ten week workshop with the Bedford-Stuyvensant YMCA to introduce young students to the art of working with watches. They state: Our mentoring partnership… -
Vintage Longines For Czech Air Force: 1938 Anti-Magnetic With Engraved Case Back
2 Nov 2009 | 6:36 amA lot of the requests we get from our Watch Finder service involve vintage military pieces. People really love timepieces that have true provenance, and the most sure fire way to get a story with your watch is to buy one that has seen some action. It's hard to find an original military watch in good condition that is worth buying, but we came across one in Antiquorum's catalog for their upcoming 35th anniversary auction that we really dig. The Longines you see to the right was built for the Czech Air Force circa 1938. Engraved on the case back is "Majetek Vojenské…

Repair for Pierce/Accro Triple date moonphase?
7 Nov 2009 | 12:11 amHi fellow Watchuseekers, I have a Pierce (Accro on dial) triple date moonphase watch, probably from the 1950's. It's listed in Shugart under Pierce, and the movement is signed thus. It has at least one part that needs replacing (called something like "swap wheel", I forget what the watchmaker said, but it is connected to winding and setting the crown) Here's a photo of the watch; I don't have a photo of the movement handy but can take one if it will help. Does anyone know where I could get this repaired for a reasonable amount? It's not in gem mint condition, so not worth putting… -

Seiko Ananta Spring Drive Watches
6 Nov 2009 | 12:38 amThis article is about two things. First, about the very nice Seiko Ananta Spring Drive watches (yes they are available in the US), and also about "what you need to know about the Seiko Spring Drive movement." In addition to the Spring Drive version of the Ananta watches, there are also versions of the watches with in-house made in Japan, Seiko automatic mechanical movements. Though I am going to save additional discussion of them for another article. In a nutshell, if you don't already lust for a Spring Drive watch, you should. Let's talk more about the Ananta watches. Horus Ultramarinum Watch
5 Nov 2009 | 12:15 amMonaco's Horus watches represent the ultimate in rich people talking about rich watches. Pretty much that is only who they care about even marketing to. So consider me learning about these watches against their wishes almost! Maybe I am exaggerating, but brands like this have product launch parties on boats were only select people are invited. Let's put it this way, the brand's mascot is a falcon, and yes they have a real falcon. Only falconers needs apply to hang with the Horus watch crowd. The brand is new, and have a few interesting things. I want to share with you their Horus Ultramarinum… -
Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SED Tourbillon Limited Edition Watch Hands-On
4 Nov 2009 | 2:18 amLast March I was very intrigued by the marketing images of this new Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SED Tourbillon watch with its intense level of skeletonization, in carbon fiber, that looked like tree branches. If you look closely, you can tell that the movement is barley even there. The biggest parts are the one minute flying tourbillon and the mainspring. Surprisingly, the manually wound Roger Dubuis caliber RD 02 SQ3 movement has a 60 hour power reserve (movement bears the Seal of Geneva). One thing that I want to make clear is that the "branches" of the movement are done in carbon fiber - which… -

My Bremont Martin-Baker Watch Article On AskMen.com
3 Nov 2009 | 12:35 pmI can really appreciate this watch from a functional level. Truth be told, I don't think that Bremont had to do too much new stuff to make the Bremont Martin-Baker MB-1 or MB-2 watches as durable as they are. It was more a matter of applying existing techniques to make the watch as durable as it is. The difference really is in the physical testing that the watches underwent to test out their durability. Basically they can survive the uber amount of g-forces you experience when being ejected out of an airplane via ejection seat, and the subsequent jerky ride back to Earth. The MB-1 model is…

Flashback: Retro Design
3 Nov 2009 | 11:57 amNew Victionary book about retro design and how it’s appearing in contemporary graphical work. Looks good as both inspiration and a reference tool. Emerged today as the perfect marriage between old and new, retrospective designs are deemed to be an inevitable phrase in the design cycle when designers begin to look back and find inspirations for new graphic styles in the depressive pixel age. Some think these designs has cheered the digital era with the lost enthusiasm for new findings and the future, others reckon it as a tribute to the prominent art and design movements between 1920 and…

Movement Decoration Explained
29 Oct 2009 | 2:25 pmFor most of us watch freaks, big part of the fun is in the mechanical movement. Handwound or automatic, doesn’t matter, as long as it has a mechanical heartbeat instead of a battery operated electronic circuit (exceptions aside). Most brands use movements built by companies such as ETA, Soprod, Lemania etc. Other companies, the so-called in-house manufacturers, develop and produces their own movements. Sometimes, they even let other watch brands use their movements (like Jaeger-LeCoultre for example, Piaget or Girard-Perregaux and there are much more examples from the past). Besides… -
Glashütte Original Pocket Watch No. 1
28 Oct 2009 | 3:16 pmI have a few of them, pocket watches I mean. I just got them from my grandfather, and it seems that most of him were owned by his own father and grandfather. I never wear them and they just sit tight in the safe. Although I can admire a nice pocket watch, I don’t see myself wearing (or is it carrying?) one of those time pieces. However, I guess there is a market for them, since Glashütte Original just introduced their Pocket Watch No.1 today on the 28th of October. With the launch of the Glashütte Original Pocket Watch No. 1, the established manufactory harkens back to this epoch and… -

Louis Erard 1931 18K Rose Gold
25 Oct 2009 | 1:58 pmMy first Solid Rose Gold watch, a 18K Rose Gold Louis Erard 1931 manual winding watch. I really like this one, and its about 40mm in diameter, with a Peseaux/ETA 7001 movement, a manual winding workhorse like the Unitas 6497, albeit quite a bit smaller. This movement is used by many brands out there and some that modify movements such as Nomos, Blancpain and Chronoswiss. Louis Erard is a more affordable brand out there, that still makes some beautiful watches more in the dressy/classy line-up. The 1931 series is a very sensibly sized line with refined dials and solid build quality, especially…

Mechanical vs Quartz
6 Nov 2009 | 8:16 amMy first intention when writing this blog was to simply indicate the difference between a Quartz watch and a Mechanical watch. It seemed quite a straightforward project at the time - that is until I started reading through Internet articles and blogs. I started by reading informative articles about the major differences between Quartz and Mechanical watches; I read the simple explanations and then I delved a bit deeper into the not so simple explanations.Everything seemed tranquil and scientific … until I clicked on a thread.I could feel the tension lifting off the WebPages, a kind of harsh… -

Antique Watch Parts with a Sting.
2 Nov 2009 | 11:39 amDo you see what I see? Could it be part watch movement, part ... beetle? Huh? This creation is the brainchild of artist Mike Libby, who founded a highly original company called "Insectlab" He joins mostly antique mechanical movement watch parts, and non-endangered high quality specimen from Africa, China, New Guinea, Brazil, and any other places where insects are huge and hairy. Mike Libby has a Degree in Sculpture from RISD, and has been in many exhibits in the USA and Canada. There is a definite Sci-Fi feel to his creations, as he says he likes to merge the real with the unreal, fantasy… -
The Movement of an Old Watch
2 Nov 2009 | 10:52 amIn this world of gadgets and gizmos, one expects stuff to work; if not it gets thrown out or if the effort is worth it, get it fixed. A delicately crafted watch case which stopped working ..."Oh 50 years ago, and I never really got it fixed,"as per great grandma, may be viewed with slight dismay by Billy, a watch novice. Billy may be holding a truly exceptional masterpiece from a great company like Vacheron Constantin or Patek Phillipe, but to Billy the watch is a broken old thing. One such story occurred to my neighbor and it took an aged indignant watchmaker to change her view on old…

The Mother of All Constellation FrankenFakes
5 Oct 2009 | 5:00 amHi I'm a fake-aholic and it's been several months since my last outbreak!I've been trying to wean myself off reporting fakes, so as to concentrate on the important stuff - like writing essays on REAL Connies! But this one caused me to fall off the wagon and slip back into my addiction. These Chinese fakes have been circulating for about four or five years, but this is the first ersatz coin-edge bezelled Grand Luxe with a black dial that I have seen. Yes, bring out the party hats, this eBay seller 'mickship 66' has gone to some lengths to make this frankenfake as alluring as possible - he… -
Omega Constellation de Luxe - the Penultimate!
3 Oct 2009 | 6:44 pmOne Omega Constellation collection of watches that has weathered the recent financial storm well is the de Luxe collection. The Omega Constellation Gene Pool
20 Sep 2009 | 11:04 pmThis post has been a long time coming and traces the origins of the original Omega Constellation concept back to its roots in 1943.The larger focus is on the Omega Centenary produced to celebrate Omega's 100 years of manufacturing history. This is a 'living' essay, and while I have been at pains to provide as accurate a review as possible of these early models, there is always the potential for error when delving into the detail of Omega history and horology. So, please feel free to offer any insights that will add to its substance or greater accuracy. Also if you would like to have your… -

rssCloud Update
5 Nov 2009 | 8:19 amTwo months ago we turned on support for rssCloud on WordPress.com. Today we’re announcing some improvements. Initially rssCloud limited update pings to the IP address that made the notification request. To get around this a domain parameter was suggested, that included a challenge mechanism to verify the notification request. WordPress.com now supports the domain parameter ( and challenge ) for rssCloud notification requests. The WordPress.org rssCloud plugin supports it as well. An issue that was specific to WordPress.com also came up. Under certain conditions it was possible to get a… -

Review of the Seiko SBCM023
1 Nov 2009 | 9:34 amThe Seiko SMCM023 is a deceptive watch. At first glance, if you look at the bezel, case, bracelet and dial, it appears to hail from their line of SKX mechanical divers. The guarded crown at four o'clock position, the SKX hands, and thick lume all conspire to deceive. A closer look at the dial with its "perpetual calendar" text tells the informed observer that this is, in fact, an unusual quartz movement. -

Remember to set your watches back tonight! Ernst Benz reminded me!
31 Oct 2009 | 9:40 amI have so many different email addresses that I sometimes forget to check all of them. I must have completely spaced one of them because when I opened it, I had messages from back several months ago. (sorry for not getting back to you, guys) One of the messages I got just the other day, was this great Daylight Savings Time reminder from Ernst Benz with their amazing Chronolunar Automatic on it. With Halloween falling on a Saturday and DST happening so late this year, I am glad that I opened it or I would have forgotten all about it. (actually, I saw this on A Blog to Read, as well, so I… -

Panerai is downsizing - The popular Italian watch brand will introduce a 42mm Radiomir in January 2010.
28 Oct 2009 | 5:35 pmOfficine Panerai, is still holding their position as one of the most popular watch brands in a stressed market. When the watch brand introduced their 44mm Luminor series in 1997, the watch market had not yet embraced oversized watches. But Panerai changed all that. 44, 45 and 47mm seem to be the standard size of a Panerai, however the Florentine watch company will introduce a stunning 42mm Radiomir (PAM336) in pink gold with a tobacco brown dial (a'la their limited Edition 232). The layout of the dial is the classic seconds at 9 style. The exceptional legibility in the dark is in fact…

Hublot’s UNICO is Revealed! A first look at Hublot Caliber HUB1240
6 Nov 2009 | 7:09 amEver since Hublot CEO Jean-Claude Biver mentioned the word “Unico” in my post-Baselworld 2009 Interview with him, I and many others have been eagerly anticipating the first opportunity to get a look at Hublot’s new – and first in-house – movement. At the recent inauguration of Hublot’s new manufacture in Nyon, Switzerland (near Geneva), UNICO was revealed. With 330 componenets combining to deliver a very respectable 70+ hours power reserve, Hublot’s UNICO caliber is a flyback chronograph movement developed entirely by Hublot’s R&D… -
SIHH 2010: Audemars Piguet Millenary Carbon One Tourbillon Chronograph
5 Nov 2009 | 7:08 pmAs I said…these previews are most certainly one of my favorite times of the year. And here we have a very striking and bold looking watch from Audemars Piguet that will be officially unveiled at SIHH 2010. At first glance, the watch dial looks to busy, too difficult to read. But then again it has some cool materials that give the watch a very nice sporty and tough look to it – forged carbon case – bezel, crown and pushers in cerarmic – and also some blackened steel on this watch – the caseback and the buckle. Wow – what a combination of materials! … -
SIHH 2010: A Thinner, Smaller, Sleeker….Panerai?
5 Nov 2009 | 6:23 pmYes, watch fans it is true – a thinner, smaller, sleeker Panerai is scheduled to be born in 2010. As I alluded to in my last post, 2010 may very well be the year of the small watch. And I say “small” in the most relative of senses and as I am silently laughing to myself. Perhaps “not as large” would be a better descriptor - especially when we are talking about a brand such as Panerai. If you did not know, Panerai was perhaps the initiator of the “big watch” trend when CEO Angelo Bonati presented what was at the time a collection of strikingly… -
SIHH 2010: Ultra Slim Vacheron Constantin Historiques 1955 and Historiques 1968
4 Nov 2009 | 5:10 amMy favorite time of year – previews of the new watches coming in 2010! The first event of the new year is SIHH, formally known as the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, and it is held in January. Prior to the event, each manufacturer in attendance usually releases a preview of one or two of the many new watches that it has been working on and plans to release in 2010. I’ll be highlighting most of the previews here on First In Watches, but for the official event most of the action will be on the Perpetuelle.com Forums (which by the way have been redesigned and… -
Watch Review: Armin Strom Blue Chip Automatic Skeleton
2 Nov 2009 | 6:34 amThe watch you will see here is one of the finest watches one could ever hope to own – or wear, if even for a few minutes. If I think of what this watch tells me when it is on the wrist or under the loupe, I would say that the Armin Strom Blue Chip Automatic Skeleton exudes strength & power, individuality & intricacy – all at once. With its massive 46.5mm diameter and 16mm thickness, the case of the Blue Chip Skeleton says unequivocally that it is built for a “power player”, and that it is a watch that will take a back seat to none of its equally sized…
