Often times watch guys go a little crazy when it comes to describing their unique pieces. We use terms like Red, Double Red, Blackout, Floating, Underlined, Explorer Dial, Tropical, Spider, Four-Line, and a many more seemingly nonsensical terms. Some make a lot of sense, for example a Red Submariner has the word "Submariner" written in red. Others aren't quite as obvious. Today we have come across a very early and very rare version of the Rolex Cosmograph, later named the Daytona. In fact, this reference (6239) was the very first Cosmograph made, and because it doesn't…

1969 Cotton Bowl Classic Rolex Datejust: The King of Watches Gets a Heaping Dose of Americana
18 Nov 2009 | 9:17 amIt's amazing how different a timepiece can be perceived just by changing something ever so slightly. The Rolex Datejust, AKA the most versatile watch on the planet, can be made clean and simple, interesting and exotic, or even notorious by adding a simple logo or a rock or two. Today we've found a piece of pure Americana that happens to be in the form of a Rolex wristwatch. This classic Datejust was made in 1969 for the two participants in that year's Cotton Bowl. For those who don't remember, it was this game that Texas beat Tennessee by a score of 36 to 13. … -
A White Rolex Explorer? Yes, They Do Exist and They Are Damn Cool
17 Nov 2009 | 6:40 pmWe've said it before and we'll say it again, the Rolex Explorer is probably one of our favorite watches, period, end of sentence. It is the smallest, simplest, and most understated Rolex sport watch and its purity has been left unchanged for the better part of a century. We have written about some pretty interesting ones in our day (for a full list, see here) but if there is one uniting quality, it is that each Explorer had a black face. Or did they?? Today's watch is most certainly a Rolex Explorer, but a rare white-dialled version from the early 1960s or 1950s. It is reference… -
Zenith El Primero Poker Chip Face: One of the First Automatic Chronos With A Colorful Design
17 Nov 2009 | 9:12 amA vintage Zenith El Primero is something we have a lot of respect for. It was one of the very first automatic movements ever produced, and a version of it later went on to power the venerable Rolex Daytona. This vintage El Primero chronograph is really unlike any Zenith we've come across, and it's rather cool. They usually look a lot like this. The 18 karat yellow gold case is nice against the white face, but it is really the pattern work around the registers that set this watch apart from more traditional El Primeros. As the seller mentions, it features "a magnificent… -
Heuer Autavia For Argentinian Air Force: A Valjoux 72 Powered Military Piece For A Great Price
16 Nov 2009 | 6:46 amA while back we showed you a very cool Rolex Daytona that was issued by the Peruvian Air Force. The movement in this Rolex is a Valjoux 72 and the price is surely about the same as your average mid-level Executive luxury automobile, which limits many of us from purchasing it. But, what if you really wanted a great Swiss watch from a storied manufacturer that featured the very same movement and was also issued to a South American Military force in the 1960s, AND what if it was about 1/10th the price? Today is your lucky day folks. A rare Heuer Autavia that was made for the…

Sinn U1 White Limited Edition Watch Available On James List
22 Nov 2009 | 12:44 amI don't know how a watch like this slipped through the cracks. It came out just last summer as a limited edition. This is a very interesting and rare Sinn watch that is thankfully available on James List, and for not that much dough. Many of you know of the super functional and durable Frankfurt, Germany based watch maker Sinn. A few years ago they released one of their most style forward watches ever, the U1. It has a few limited editions including an all black, Sinn U Black (not typo, just "U"). Well this is another limited edition, called the Sinn U1 White (sometimes U1 Snow). It takes the… -
Armin Strom Reveals First In-House Made Movement, The Calibre ARM09
21 Nov 2009 | 1:30 amArmin Strom is the newest watch makers around who is proud to announce that they will be making their own movements. Funded by some big money gentlemen who want results, they wanted their brand to have in-house made movements, so they made it happen. Until now Armin Strom watches featured impressively decorated movements sourced from ETA, but that is all about to change. The ARM09 is proof of that. Usually when a watch maker releases their first in-house made movement it is fine. Nothing special, but it is still their own "baby." Armin Strom on the other hand has given us something very… -

The Shelter: Dubai
19 Nov 2009 | 10:19 amEven though I’m told there isn’t a word for entrepreneur in Arabic, there is certainly a good amount of “from the ground up” spirit happening from within a new generation of people living in Dubai. I had the pleasure of visiting one such project called The Shelter, a wonderful workspace, cafe, store, screening room type place. Linde Werdelin 3-Timer review: No 13 arrived!
22 Nov 2009 | 2:34 pmSince I got back from my honeymoon on the 13th of November, I am proudly wearing my Linde Werdelin 3-Timer with brown dial, no.13/22 (my birthday is on the 13th of April). Ofcourse, I already wrote an article on the prototype that Linde Werdelin sent me, but I thought it would be nice to do a small write-up on the final version as well. The picture above shows three of my watches, all – in my opinion – similar in design and wear. My review doesn’t compare these three watches, since they each have their own pros and cons (and prices), but I included the photograph to show… -
100 Years of Rolex for iPhone
21 Nov 2009 | 3:17 pmAbout a year ago, I wrote about Mondani’s book ‘100 years of Rolex’, which is a must have if you are a (serious) Rolex passionate. Now, especially for the iPhone user, Mondani Editore created an iPhone app (Apple users like to use this shortcut for ‘application’) that contains 182MB of information about Rolex wristwatches. Since Rolex, and especially vintage Rolex, is booming – this might be a well-aimed shot from the creators of this iPhone [killer] app. For a fraction of the price of the book (which is around 299 Euro), you will buy your own electronic… -

14 Nov 2009 | 9:18 amI posted this video a couple weeks ago, but had forgotten to announce it here. So I’m linking it now. This is to supplement the Wilson Watch Works Navigator Watch Review that I wrote previously. I also believe that its called an Observer Dial not a Navigator dial, and since Wilson Watch Works doesn’t name their watches, I had to kind of make up a name. Nevertheless, it is a very solid, well-made watch using great materials. I hope you enjoy the video if you haven’t already: -

19 Nov 2009 | 11:23 amHublot won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve prize for jewelery watch of the year 2009, and I am not surprised. Limited to but one piece, the Black Cavier Bang is strictly black tie with a Solo T Tourbillon and Power reserve of 120 hours making this watch a power house. Hublot ,however, thinks it rather resembles caviar and has provided the watch with the title,"Black Cavier Bang."At One million Dollars it does not matter what it is called, it matters what it costs. The cost may have to do with shipping of the raw materials; specifically the Black Diamond. Hundreds of precision cut black… -

Hugues de Rouret and Jean-Claude Biver are explaining the reasons which encouraged them to join forces in Paris today. The main fruit of this alliance will be the creation of a watch in the AFC colours, a percentage of the royalties from which will be donated to the Fondation ICM (Institute for Cerebral and Medullary Disorders). -

Omega Chronostop - Stopwatch for the Wrist
22 Nov 2009 | 5:22 pmWhile the reason for this site is to pay homage to Omega Constellations of the 1950s and 60s, which I believe to be some of the best production watches ever made, I receive a constant stream of correspondence from visitors asking questions about other iconic Omega models of the time.If questions go beyond that of a trickle and there are no other sites dedicated to a particular collection, I customarily knock up an essay to fill the void. Such was the case with the Omega Chronostop, a particularly charming fusion of design and function from the 1960s.As I was gathering pictures of different… -
A Story About an Original Black Dial Constellation
19 Nov 2009 | 3:08 amCalibre 504 Omega 18k gold Constellations aren't all that common, only 25000 pieces having been produced across a range of metals and dials. Black dialled calibre 504 models are in a different league altogether, with less than a thousand believed to have been manufactured.Generally in the 1950s, black dialled models were a ‘special order’ watch and so, today, with the resurgence of interest in, and popularity of, black dialled Constellations from the nineteen-fifties and sixties, serious collectors hanker to have an example in their collections.I received an email from John Hardy who… -
Beware the Rush of Pre-Christmas Omega Vintage Fakes
13 Nov 2009 | 10:29 pmEvery year in the lead up to Christmas, an army of bottom feeders, parasites and other opportunistic vermin invades on-line vintage watch markets to feed off the naivete and yuletide sentiment of people wishing to acquire nice vintage watches for those who are significant in their lives.Judging by the number of fake new watches and bogus or franken vintage pieces appearing in a range of brands, this year is hotting up to be a biggie. Yes, it’s going to be a bumper Christmas for the crims and shonks who parade their fake wares on eBay, other on-line establishments and some bricks and mortar… -
Cleaning and Oiling Your Vintage Watches
7 Nov 2009 | 1:44 amThe issue of cleaning and oiling watches is a perennial one on most watch fora, the most frequently asked question being about service intervals. The general recommendation is that a vintage watch should be dis-assembled, cleaned and oiled every three to five years, depending on use.The reason for keeping a vintage movement well-serviced is simple. Regularly serviced watches, particularly with quality movements such as Omega vintage calibres, rarely ever wear out. For example, I have several family Omegas now more than 50 years old and they still retain all of their original movement parts. -
Omega Geneve Dynamic I - Best-Seller of the 70s
30 Oct 2009 | 9:53 pmMore than forty years have elapsed since the release of the Omega Geneve Dynamic first generation collection. With its 'space-age' lines and novel dial designs, the Dynamic I is fast becoming a collectible for those Omegas fans who don't wish to break the bank in pursuit of their hobbies. The Dynamic established a number of firsts when it was released as well as pushing the boundaries of functionality and design. It was also powered by a family of Omega movements that, to this day, are regarded as some of the best production movements ever made.Over time I have received countless emails from…

Rolex and 904L Steel
18 Nov 2009 | 12:30 pmMost Swiss watch companies use 316L steel for their cases, which is five times more durable than standard steel. But Rolex is the only one to use 904L steel, which is corrosion resistant, virtually scratch proof, and far more expensive than 316L. 904L contains chromium, which when mixed with oxygen, forms a thin, virtually impregnable barrier on the surface of the case. This alloy combination is so hard that Rolex had to develop a special 250-ton press capable of stamping a watch case from a block of 904L. What Does 'Swiss Made' Really Mean?
11 Nov 2009 | 1:36 pmAs we've previously reported, the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) has been pressuring the Swiss government to strengthen legal criteria for use of the term, “Swiss made,” on watches. The FH would like to raise the threshold from 50 percent to at least 80 percent for mechanical watches and to 60 percent for quartz ones. While the government mulls this over, the FH has posted some detailed information as to what currently constitutes "Swiss Made" and what to look for before you make your next purchase. Swiss Watch Demand Drops in September
26 Oct 2009 | 8:57 amSwiss watch exports suffered another rough month in September, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH). The number of timepieces exported was down by about 1 million units in the last month, a 26 percent decline. Through the first nine months of the year, overall exports are down 26 percent, too, said the FH. While demand in China remained stable, month-over-month sales slumped 43 percent in Hong Kong and 30 percent in the United States, the two largest markets for Swiss watches. 22 Oct 2009 | 10:14 amTAG Heuer's Monaco V4 is finally coming to market, five years after it's much lauded introduction as a concept watch. According to Jean-Christophe Babin, President and CEO of TAG Heuer, the watch took this long to perfect because of it's unusually complicated movement, which includes a drive-belt transmission that draws its inspiration from an automotive engine. Only 150 of the platinum timepieces will be made and they will come at a pretty penny - $80,000 US. > Read the press release Q & A with TAG Heuer's Jean-Christophe Babin Related Posts New Prez Prefers TAG…

One of the first areas we thought could be improved was the ease of customization. Madoff s Luxury Watch Collection Sells Big
18 Nov 2009 | 8:48 amFrom wooden duck decoys, and a personalized Met’s baseball jacket, to all but one of the 46 luxury watches which were sold at the Madoff auction, everything fetched a higher price that what the now jailed financier originally paid for it. Why people would want to own something that was purchased with money that Madoff stole from his clients is beyond me; however the good news is that the proceeds of the auction, which netted over $1 million dollars, will be shared among his victims. Here is a partial listing of the watches that Madoff wore and were sold. The only luxury men’s watch that… -

To do this, the company has employed the friendly faces of long-time celebrity brand Ambassadors Cindy Crawford and George Clooney. With the help of Audemars Piguet, Chanel will design and produce a new version of the J12 called Noir Intense or “Intense Black.” The improved watch will run on AP’s 3125 movement, for which Chanel redesigned the balance and the rotor in gold, topped with the black ceramic that made it so coveted the first time around; the final result will be called the Chanel-AP 3125. Remember to set your watches back tonight! Ernst Benz reminded me!
31 Oct 2009 | 9:40 amI have so many different email addresses that I sometimes forget to check all of them. I must have completely spaced one of them because when I opened it, I had messages from back several months ago. (sorry for not getting back to you, guys) One of the messages I got just the other day, was this great Daylight Savings Time reminder from Ernst Benz with their amazing Chronolunar Automatic on it. With Halloween falling on a Saturday and DST happening so late this year, I am glad that I opened it or I would have forgotten all about it. (actually, I saw this on A Blog to Read, as well, so I… -

28 Oct 2009 | 5:35 pmOfficine Panerai, is still holding their position as one of the most popular watch brands in a stressed market. When the watch brand introduced their 44mm Luminor series in 1997, the watch market had not yet embraced oversized watches. But Panerai changed all that. 44, 45 and 47mm seem to be the standard size of a Panerai, however the Florentine watch company will introduce a stunning 42mm Radiomir (PAM336) in pink gold with a tobacco brown dial (a'la their limited Edition 232). F.P. Journe For Junior? Sacré Bleu! No – CHRONOMÈTRE BLEU!
22 Nov 2009 | 6:37 pmHere is a very interesting and visually appealing new watch from elite watchmaker F.P. Journe. First let me say what a beautiful blue color this watch is (and merely a coincidence that it bears a similarly rich, deep blue-colored dial as the IWC Laureus that I featured here in First In Watches about a month ago). More intriguing to me about this watch is its intended wearer – is this a Journe for Junior? It seems so! Journe presents his new CHRONOMÈTRE BLEU as “The First F.P. Journe Junior Creation with Chronometric Precision” while noting that… -

Has Tag Heuer Lost Its Mind?
20 Nov 2009 | 6:41 am“You have got to be kidding me.” These were my first words upon seeing a couple of the items in Tag Heuer’s new accessory e-boutique. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Has TAG Heuer lost its mind? Or is TAG Heuer just trying to insult our intelligence. Let me list the absurdities: 8 GB usb storage keychain fob – $360!!!!!! 30 GB usb storage – “avant gard credit card size” – $700!!!!!! And let me then add: The belief that your watch brand can sell anything at any price? Priceless. See for yourself at… -

Two Titanium Patek Philippe’s You Didn’t Know Existed
19 Nov 2009 | 7:19 amI love one-of-a-kind watches. Particularly those that get produced solely for a charitable cause. Today I have something very special to share – actually 2 very special “somethings” – each a one-of-a-kind Patek Philippe cased in titanium, each produced in support of a single Swiss charitable organization named Children Action. This year, the Geneva-based Children Action organization celebrates its 15th anniversary of helping “children not helped by life, because the most fundamental of all human rights is the right to a childhood . ” Right on.
