  • An Early Look At The Hamilton intra-matic: A Winner From Basel 2012, Already

Hamilton invited us to breakfast this morning to see the highlights of their Basel 2012 collection.  There were some really excellent pieces, but the one that really caught our eye was the brand new intra-matic (all lower case). The watch is clearly vintage inspired, and just as it was in the 1950s, it will be the sister watch to the Thin-O-Matic, the tribute of which we saw last year.  The intra-matic feature simple stick markers with a domed crystal and dial.  It is a thin watch at around 7mm thick.  The intra-matic is great looking, and will be available in both steel…

There is tropical, and then there is just downright ridiculous. As we've told you before, serious vintage Rolex collectors love it when the black part of a dial turns brown - they call it "chocolate" or "tropical."  In many cases, people will pay a large premium for tropical dials. The watch we spotted today over on VRF goes beyond chocolate and beyond tropical - in fact the damn dial is so faded it's illegible to the naked eye. What it is is a vintage Tudor Submariner Ref 7298 with pointed crown guards - a pretty cool and valuable piece.  But, the dial on this one is, well, really,…

Ah, now here is a slide-rule bezel complication that I can use. I tend to make fun of these as I am not about to do long-division or calculate fuel consumption on a tiny slide-rule, if I need to figure that stuff out at all... But this one is actually handy. This new watch for 2012 from Hamilton is the Khaki X-Patrol and it has a metric to imperial conversion scale. That would prove useful as I often travel to Europe and having no idea how far things are and how much things weight. I am such a proud American. It isn't going to replace a calculator, but in comparison to most slide-rule bezels…

    THE SYDNEY TARTS
    26 Jan 2012 | 1:28 am
It's nearly three years since I had the unexpected and very rare honour of being able to photograph one of the most elusive, beautiful, and horologically significant timepieces of the century. I refer, of course, to the somewhat pompously-titled Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Watch With Audemars Piguet Escapement... This absolutely gorgeous creature landed inside my light tent under very odd circumstances, recounted here. The watch you see above is a prototype that had been living on the wrist of its creator, Fabrice Deschanel (of Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi) for some two years,…

Yvan Arpa is a breath of fresh air in the watch industry. Having worked his way up to managerial level within established Swiss brands, he decided a few years ago to throw that all away, and do something really daring as artistic director for a new brand, Romaine Jerome. A series of new models followed, each more daring and controversial than the last. Watches with pieces of metal from the wreck of the Titanic; double-tourbillon watches with no hands, which told the time to within an accuracy of 12 hours; a watch made from a case material so reactive, it had to be sealed inside a glass bubble…

The Santos-Dumont is a classic on the Cartier line-up, and the skeleton is something of cult favorite among collectors.  The deco numerals cut right into the structure of the watch are artfully done - in fact, the roman numerals are actually formed by the skeletonized bridges of the movement - and to see the Cartier calibre 9614 MC fully exposed in all its glory is really an impressive sight.  This year, the Santos-Dumont Skeleton is introduced in pink gold for the first time and the result is just stunning.  Each pink gold Santos-Dumont Skeleton will be individually numbered…

Abidal actually visited the cancer ward where he met with Garcia and several other sick children.  At the end of the meeting, Abidal took the gold Rolex…

As I cruise through the internet collecting information about vintage speedmasters I have come across articles about the differences in the hands, dials and cases. I haven't seen any that address the bezels. On this forum we have members who probably have just about every kind of common (tachymetere) speedy bezels. I haven't seen any pics of the decimel, pulsimetric or telemetric bezels. In a recent thread it was pointed out by Trim that not all of the vintage pre moon bezels were of the "dot over 90" variety. It probably takes a dedicated car lover to have heard of UK based Caterham. But I would garner to say that even less people have heard of small watch brand Uniq. Not yet necessarily official, this is a concept Caterham watch by the watch design company. They have produced other similar watches so I believe it likely that these will make their way to production at some point. There is something interestingly similar about Caterham and Uniq. Both are exclusive little companies but those that aren't interested in producing things at wild prices. Caterham's mostly "Superlight" cars are speedy and…

Stockholm-based Teenage Engineering are at it again with a new OS Update and a new product.  Can’t wait to try it all out on my OP-1. The OS update delivers new drum and sequencer modes and badly-needed MIDI sync, plus cool MIDI modulation. Combined, it seems the OP-1 has really matured – sync alone removes a major obstacle for some adopters. The new hardware is Opbox, a combination USB host / MIDI / CV box with analog sensors – and it has pretty plug-in modules and even custom-made shoes to match (below). The shoes may not be terribly practical, but the Oplab fits a unique niche…

I had a great time at SIHH with my friends from IWC yesterday. Totally loving the new Pilots Watches. If I had to pick a favorite– it would be the Ceramic Big Pilot’s Watch with Perpetual Calendar shown above. Stunning in person, I promise. Big Pilot in Ceramic and Titanium.  A nice twist on the classic model. Big Pilot Worldtimer, I should probably have one of these. And of course, the new Miramar.  I’ve seen a few different strap combinations and I’m partial to the brown leather, but the green canvas is still really solid. P.S. The booth was incredible.  Full flight…

    9 Jan 2012 | 10:11 am
Stomping around airports can get old. Design to the rescue! Jeriël Bobbe, a recent Eindhoven grad, has devised a musical floor that you play by dragging your suitcase across it. Bobbe was inspired by something he noticed during his weekly train trips from Eindhoven to Amsterdam. “Whether they are stone slabs, tactile paving for the blind, or a grid for wheelchairs, there is music in everything,” the Dutch designer writes. So he decided to formalize the music-making, by creating pieces of ribbed wood that can be arranged like musical notes. The distance between the grooves corresponds to…

It seems to be Jaeger-LeCoultre month here – which of course isn’t at a bad thing at all! I recently had the opportunity to photograph the uncommon JLC Master Compressor Navy Seals Alarm Beverly Hills Boutique Edition (what a long name). It differs from the standard edition in a) it’s very limited production run; b) the yellow accents on the compressor crowns and strap; c) the logo printing on the underside of the sapphire crystal; d) the most obvious part, the anthracite case. As usual, all images may be clicked on for larger versions. The movement is the same as the…

And although Don Draper wore a Rolex Explorer in HBO’s Mad Men TV series, Jaeger-LeCoultre recently released a Mad Men special ‘Mad about Reverso’ that features a Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce logo engraved in the reversible back side of the watch. I think most collectors will be familiar with the Master Tourbillon line; it is one of the most accessible entry points for this complication, and finished to a higher level than JLC’s already excellent regular pieces. But it’s unlikely that you will have ever seen these particular examples, from the Haute Joallerie and fine art lines – special pieces that are made in extremely limited numbers and never seen outside the boutiques. Much more artisanal handwork is required than normal, from the cutting of the rare stone dial to inlaying of the diamonds to guilloching and…

Designed by Genta, this watch already has seen a lot of coverage here at Fratellowatches (most popular topics here, here and here). During the SIHH 2012 in Geneva, Audemars Piguet introduced an appropriate successor of the current ‘Jumbo’ ref.15202ST, the ‘Jumbo’ ref.15202ST. That’s right, nothing changes in the naming or reference number, only the watch itself changes a tiny bit.

This is my recently posted Video review of my Montblanc Timerwalker Chrono, with the automatic Valjoux 7750 movement in it. Nice watch. I recall that the ads featured Nicolas Cage on them at one point. Great detailing on the case, and a very interesting stainless bracelet to boot. I was thinking it was about time that I reviewed a Wolf Designs winder. I think the Wolf Designs winders are some of the best bang for buck winders out there and I know several people that have them. They are affordable, well-made, look great, and have good response and customer service from what I’ve heard. Their pricepoint makes them easily affordable and much better than the plastic stuff that is out there. The Module 2.5 Single is a basic model with no cover to protect from dust. This is important to some people, and less important to others. The outside of the winder is a…

  • This is What a Franken-Fake 14900 Omega Constellation Looks Like

    15 Jan 2012 | 5:35 am
The watch pictured here and currently listed here on eBay by seller seamaster147 is a franken-fake. This may or may not come as a surprise to the seller, so let's all get an education in respect to this piece. Described as a "rare vintage gents Omega constellation pie pan chronometer watch in stunning condition", the watch is anything but.   The dial is a complete fake with appalling dial

    11 Jan 2012 | 7:28 pm
While the past four years have been plagued by prophesies of impending financial doom, the market in quality vintage Omega watches has remained buoyant.  Prices continue to rise for authentic Omega models in a range of different lines.  So as to remain faithful to the theme of this website, we will, however, focus on Omega Constellations. The vintage watch market can be divided into
  • The Gender-Bending Omega Constellation 153.001

    10 Sep 2011 | 8:42 pm
This men’s Omega Constellation of the nineteen-sixties has long suffered the ignominy of confused gender identity and has generally been regarded as a bit of a sissy. Often described as, heaven forbid, a ‘unisex’ watch or a ‘larger ladies’ piece, the 153.001 men’s chronometer languishes in a horological sub-culture that few males dare to enter. But when one scrutinises its aesthetics, its

The Omega Constellation Jumbo model 168.001 is mostly seen in oriental markets and few make their way to globalised electronic auction sites. But for those who wish to don their tropical whites, throw on a wolseley pattern Pith and go on safari to the far-ish east, you may well encounter a Jumbo in its natural environment. • Requirements for the Coveted Geneva Seal Just Got a Lot Tougher

    Jason Fox
    15 Jan 2012 | 2:33 pm
The coveted Geneva Seal was created in 1886 to identify timepieces built following Geneva’s traditional watchmaking standards. Up until now, only a watch movement manufactured in Geneva and meeting 12 strict quality criteria was needed to get the seal. But those restictions have been tightened recently and new rules are set to come into force in June 2012. These include tighter requirements for the movement, a new emphasis on "external components," such as the finishing of the case, and new guidelines on where the watch is assembled. Companies that currently seek the Geneva Seal…
  • Swiss Court: Swatch Group Can Reduce Watch Part Supplies

    8 Jan 2012 | 12:50 pm
In late December, a Swiss court decided that the Swatch Group—owner of brands such as Omega, Hamiliton, Rado, Tissot, Blancpain, and many others—can reduce deliveries of watch components beginning in 2012, rejecting arguments from rivals who said such a move would damage or even force them out of business. The Swatch Group is the pre-eminent supplier by far of parts and movements to the Swiss watch industry via its ETA subsidiary—but has often stated it wants to focus its attention on in-house production. Nine watch manufacturers, including Frederique Constant, are likely to appeal…

  • TAG Heuer Mikrogirder: The Inside Story

    DC
    26 Jan 2012 | 9:02 pm
Concept watches- like concept cars- can take one of two forms: either an outlandish styling exercise to win a few headlines, or a genuine preview of where a brand is headed. The TAG Heuer Mikrogirder, announced last week in Geneva, is definitely the latter. In fact, perhaps the least interesting part of the Mikrogirder story is the headline number of 5/ 10,000ths of a second. It’s easy to be blase about such a stunning achievement, but if TAG Heuer had simply reached this milestone by developing a  faster evolution of ...

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the new TAG Heuer Mikrogirder is not that TAG Heuer have put out a watch twice as fast as the Mirkotimer- it’s the fact that they’ve done it with a movement that- again- reinvents mechanical movements. The 2011 Mikrotimer had no balance wheel. The 2009 Pendulum had no ...

While the existing series ballooned into a dizzying array of models, the new series keeps things focused with three flavours- a Watch, a Chronograph and a Watch with an alarm function. Giving the series variety is the array of materials- including stainless steel, aluminium, ceramic and titanium-carbide- employed to give the different models their own look and feel. Since its introduction back in 1986, the The Formula 1 has been TAG ...

The TAG Heuer Formula 1 has a special place in the brand’s history, being the first watch released following the acquisition of Heuer by Techniques d’Avant Garde (“TAG”) in 1985. While Heuer had spent the late 1970s and early 1980s desperately trying to make money from mechanical watches that were designed for a very different competitive environment, the Formula 1 was a watch of its time. It was the first analogue Heuer/ TAG Heuer series to be quartz-only and to this day there has never been an automatic model. The inspiration ...

In watchmaking tradition, “regulator” watches were special pendulum clocks, used by watchmakers in their workshops to set the exact time and therefore to test the precision of smaller watches.  They were also used in science whenever extremely precise time indicators were needed, like in the field of astronomy or nautical navigation.  In addition to sitting on the watchmakers bench, regulator pendulum clocks of this sort also stood in the offices of harbormasters in all of the world’s major ports. While this is new Montblanc Nautique Regulator is an interesting watch of this type, I…

Readers of Perpetuelle know that I rarely cover the sub-$1,000 watch market, save for some interesting mechanicals or pieces that catch my eye.  This new Technomarine “Night Vision” piece from Technomarine caught my eye.   Speaking of Technomarine — wayback when, the brand was very considered fashionable and trendy, but that’s the problems with trends — they fade away.  This is more or less what happened to Technomarine.  But starting last year, the brand started to be reinvented and reinvigorated with a more sustainable product lineup (this started with…

  • Great watch - shame about the name

    26 Jan 2012 | 1:28 am
It's nearly three years since I had the unexpected and very rare honour of being able to photograph one of the most elusive, beautiful, and horologically significant timepieces of the century. I refer, of course, to the somewhat pompously-titled Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Watch With Audemars Piguet Escapement... This absolutely gorgeous creature landed inside my light tent under very odd circumstances, recounted here. The watch you see above is a prototype that had been living on the wrist of its creator, Fabrice Deschanel (of Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi) for some two years,…
  • Artya - Watches for iconoclasts

    25 Jan 2012 | 11:33 pm
Yvan Arpa is a breath of fresh air in the watch industry. Having worked his way up to managerial level within established Swiss brands, he decided a few years ago to throw that all away, and do something really daring as artistic director for a new brand, Romaine Jerome. A series of new models followed, each more daring and controversial than the last. Watches with pieces of metal from the wreck of the Titanic; double-tourbillon watches with no hands, which told the time to within an accuracy of 12 hours; a watch made from a case material so reactive, it had to be sealed inside a glass bubble…
  • SIHH 2012 : Grönefeld

    25 Jan 2012 | 8:42 pm
What's this? - I hear you say. Grönefeld are most definitely not a Richemont brand, and they most definitely do not have a booth at SIHH. All true. But they did have invitations, and so did I. Bart and Tim are big fellas, not easy to miss in a crowd. And so it came to pass that I stumbled across them quite early in the proceedings. I first met Bart and Tim back three years ago at Baselworld when they had just released their first watch, a rather intimidating tourbillon/minute repeater in a case that would not have looked out of place on Conan the Barbarian's wrist. That's not to say it was…
  • A GTG at Scopri Italian Restaurant

    24 Jan 2012 | 6:35 pm
Scopri 191 Nicholson Street Carlton VIC 3053 Ph : (03) 9347 8252 A week after having spent a few days in Melbourne, I found myself there again for the Melbourne Watchband’s end of year dinner last month, having been talked into the overnight visit by a watch friend in Perth who would also be there for the occasion. They'd booked out the private room at the top of Scopri, an Italian restaurant in Carlton which, happily, is BYO, allowing the wine buffs to bring a bottle or two. Despite being a group of 15 in the private room (or floor, rather), there was no requirement to abide by a set group…

  • SIHH 2012: IWC’s Year Of The Pilot

    Ian Ellery
    25 Jan 2012 | 2:37 am
The IWC stand was the flashiest and loudest at the show and resulted in a number of comments from a wide selection of attendees. They carried the Top Gun theme to its extreme by putting the front portion of a fighter jet on top of a gantry right at the front of the stand. You could even go and sit in it. All credit to IWC for consistently coming up with exciting themes each year however calling the press conference a mission might be pushing it a little far, but you have to live the dream. Year Of The Pilot Last year saw IWC give its classic Portofino range a face-lift, now in 2012 the focus…
  • SIHH 2012: A Closer Look At What’s New From Vacheron Constantin

    Ian Ellery
    19 Jan 2012 | 7:36 am
Last week we told you about 5 new watches being unveiled at this year’s SIHH which we thought deserved some of your attention. Amongst them was the superb Patrimony Traditionnelle 14 Day Tourbillon from master watch-makers Vacheron Constantin. Today we take a closer look at this legendary Maison and some of the new pieces they will be offering in 2012. A New Standard Of Quality In late 2011 it was announced that the requirements for earning the “Poincon de Geneve” (or Hallmark of Geneva to us non-French speakers) certification would be expanded to include not only the movement but the…
  • SIHH 2012: Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Collection (VIDEO)

    Ian Ellery
    18 Jan 2012 | 8:04 am
Jaeger-LeCoultre have been garnering a considerable amount of interest in their Duometre à Spherotourbillon recently and watching the official video about how it all works it’s not hard to see why. The question is though, what’s it really like? The Duometre Spherotourbillon With the creation of the Duometre à Spherotourbillon, JLC claims to have the first tourbillon that can be set accurately. Now, before we can confirm this we must understand the difference between this watch and the “stop” tourbillon from Lange & Sohne. On the Lange the seconds hand is mounted on the…
  • SIHH 2012: Lange & Sohne

    Ian Ellery
    17 Jan 2012 | 7:38 am
I have always been a big fan of Lange & Sohne, interviewing a previous CEO was one of my first professional watch jobs, so they will always have a special place in my heart. In 2012 our favorite German watch brand is making the most of its Saxony roots with artisan skills going back to the 12th Century. The Grande Lange 1 There are three new watches for this year; since the reformation of Lange & Sohne in 1994 the Lange 1 has been the lynchpin of the company, therefore making any change was going to be a risk. To retain the key elements of pure elegance of the Grand Lange 1 while at…
  • SIHH 2012: Richard Mille

    Ian Ellery
    16 Jan 2012 | 8:46 pm
They may only produce 2,700 watches per year but Richard Mille always manage to put on a show. This year the presentation was in 3D which is a first for me and the added dimension certainly made for an unusual experience. So, whats new for 2012? Well for starters, after spending a number of years in development, the Richard Mille in-house movement CRMA1 is finally available in the RM037. All operations are available through the crown and the various actions can be selected by the pusher and indicated on the dial, winding (W), neutral (N) and seconds (S). In fact the crown isn’t directly…
